New Technical Briefs on Contraceptive Implants; Male Circumcision and HIV

====================================================================

Looking for technical overviews on health? Global Health Technical Briefs summarize the most important information on a timely global health topic in two pages, and pinpoint the implications for public health programs.

Two new Global Health Technical Briefs are now available at www.maqweb.org:

Global Health Technical Brief: Contraceptive Implants: Safe Effective, Long-acting, Reversible

http://www.maqweb.org/techbriefs/tb43implants.pdf

Implants provide highly effective, long-acting pregnancy protection (3 to 5 years). Although insertion and removal require a trained provider, both procedures are done quickly. Contraceptive protection is immediately reversible upon implant removal; implants have no impact on long-term fertility.

Global Health Technical Brief: Male Circumcision: A New Approach to HIV Prevention

http://www.maqweb.org/techbriefs/tb44malecirc.shtml

Male circumcision reduces HIV transmission from women to men by approximately 60%. However, male circumcision is only partially protective. MC services must be accompanied by appropriate counseling and communication messages, including ABC (Abstain, Be Faithful/Reduce Number of Sexual Partners, Condom Use).

New Global Health Technical Briefs are posted regularly on MAQWeb at www.maqweb.org/techbriefs/index.shtml <http://www.maqweb.org/techbriefs/index.shtml> . Currently, the site offers 44 technical briefs on Family Planning, Healthcare Programming, Maternal and Child Health, and Malaria. The INFO Project (www.infoforhealth.org) produces Global Health Technical Briefs for the Maximizing Access and Quality Initiative.
