Project Overview: This preliminary study, through a literature review, focus groups and key informant interviews, examines the impact of social policy on the health status of older immigrant women and the health and social service seeking patterns of older immigrant women. It focuses on a specific community of older immigrant women in Toronto, Ontario and/or a specific health and social service need/issue relevant to this community, as identified in consultation with its Community Health Centre (CHC) partners and their patient communities. It also explores the role of CHC in addressing the health and social service needs of these women; and identify where service needs/pathways and the CHC service delivery system may overlap, with a view to further research and application to service models.

Health Status and Health Needs of Older Immigrant Women
"Basically we need more information, education from the bottom, starting
with the schools, creating conscience about
older women's health problems, and I think it is important for you to go to
those places where seniors are . . ."
The report "Health Status and Health Needs of Older Immigrant Women"
released today, examines the impact of social policy on the health status of
older immigrant women, and the health and social service seeking patterns of
older immigrant women in Toronto.
This report's findings are vital, especially in light of Toronto's changing
demographics. The newly released Statistics Canada census numbers highlight
a surge in immigration, particularly to the major cities Toronto, Montreal
and Vancouver. As the population changes and ages, new research that helps
us understand the needs of our communities is essential. In this vein, we
intend the report data to inform the Local Health Integration Networks'
Aging at Home Strategy, announced by the McGuinty government in August 2007.
This report draws on the literature and community-based research on the
health status, health trends, and health-seeking behaviours of older
immigrant women in Ontario. It offers workable proposed directions for
changes in policy, programs, clinical services and funding frameworks.
Further, by using community based research methods, this report offers and
advocates for a greater recognition of the voices of older immigrant women
as the people, clients, users, and designers of health care services in
Ontario. The study's participating communities include Toronto women over
the age of 50 of African, Asian (Chinese, South East Asian), East and
Central European, and Latin American origin who shared their lived
experiences in focus groups held at three partner Community Health Centres.
Some of the eight key findings in the report include:
* The reality of gender, race/ethnicity and age - triple jeopardy -
influences Ontario's health policy, service delivery, and clinical practice
* Understanding that "health" for older immigrant women means a
compassionate, effective, and efficient approach to health policy, service
delivery, and clinical practice
* Health service capacity planning - specifically, current
regionalization of health delivery in Ontario - needs to be better informed
by basic data on the variations and differentiations in the health of older
immigrant women
The report, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada , is a
collaborative effort between Dr. Ito Peng, Margot Lettner, Ontario Women's
Health Network, South Riverdale Community Health Centre, Stonegate Community
Health Centre, and Women's Health in Women's Hands Community Health Centre.
