PAHO 2004 TRAINING PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH
Young health professionals in the Americas (35 years old or less), who
have leadership skills as well as an intense interest in the
international dimensions of health, are invited to apply for the Pan
American Health Organization's 18th Training Program in International
Health (TPIH-2004). The training process will involve participants in a
work-study format at PAHO in Washington, D.C., for a period of 11 months
starting February 2, 2004.
Canadian candidates are invited to request their application form and a
complete information package via email to the following address:

CALL FOR PAPERS: PAHO "REVISTA/JOURNAL"
PAHO's monthly peer-reviewed journal, the Revista Panamericana de Salud
Pública/Pan American Journal of Public Health, is seeking manuscripts to
be considered for publication in upcoming issues. The updated, 2003
Revista/Journal guidelines describe the types of materials that appear
in the journal and their appropriate format. The journal offers
researchers in the Region a scientifically validated, peer-reviewed
outlet for public health research findings. For the updated submission

PAHO DIRECTOR VISITS ARGENTINA
PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses made her first official visit as director
to her native country Argentina last week. She met with national health
authorities and participated in a seminar on "Protecting Maternal and
Child Health in South America." Dr. Roses also met with Dr. Ginés
González García, Minister of Health, in Buenos Aires to begin work with
national authorities to evaluate the maternal and child universal
insurance that the government grants to low-income families; also under
discussion was the national drug policy, which has recently changed
based on a new law that expanded the use of generic drugs. At the
meeting, Dr. Roses and health officials also reviewed the emergency
caused by flooding in the province of Santa Fe, and discussed health
surveillance, PAHO technical cooperation in Argentina and inter-country
cooperation projects, and participation in the MERCOSUR health group.

POVERTY AND INEQUITY: TWO CLUES TO VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN
According to the Pan American Health Organization, physical aggression
against minors is more common among parents with less education, who
consider that physical punishment is a valid disciplinary measure.
Although much violence against children is a hidden problem, in Latin
America and the Caribbean thousands of children are affected. Children
between three and five years old are the ones who suffer the most
corporal punishment, and it is calculated that 85 percent of deaths by
abuse are classified as accidental or indeterminate. For each death, it
is estimated that nine children are disabled, 71 suffer serious injuries
and countless children suffer psychological damage. How can these
numbers be explained? Several studies show causes ranging from growing
social violence to vulnerability caused by the poverty and inequity in
which many inhabitants of the region live. For the full article, visit:

NURSES DAY IN THE AMERICAS CELEBRATED
International Nurses Day was celebrated in the Americas and around the
world on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. This
year's theme was "Nurses: Fighting AIDS Stigma, Caring for All."
According to PAHO, there are 97 nurses per every 10,000 people in the
United States, while in Haiti there is only one nurse for 10,000 people.
In addition to the problem of the number of nurses, there are problems
related to the low qualifications for nursing personnel in some areas
and the growing migration of specialized personnel to other areas. PAHO
has begun to work with 10 countries, implementing a regional plan to
professionalize human resources in nursing; this includes education
programs, training of practical personnel, auxiliaries and technical
personnel, and promoting higher and graduate education. For the full

PAHO'S 8th INTERNATIONAL COURSE: DENGUE AND DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER
PAHO, in collaboration with the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical
Medicine (IPK) in Havana, Cuba, will host its 8th International Course
on Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever from August 11-22, 2003. The
objective of the course is to provide a forum for discussion through
theoretical and practical sessions; presentations will be given by
lecturers from prestigious international institutions who are recognized
specialists in the fields of virology, epidemiology, vector control,
immunology, sociology and medical care, with particular emphasis on
dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever. The course will be conducted
in Spanish. The deadline for registration is July 1, 2003. For more

IN-KIND DONATIONS FOR THE IRAQ CRISIS: GUIDANCE TO DONORS
The United Nations has received many offers of in-kind humanitarian
assistance — donations of goods or personnel — for Iraq and requests for
advice on how aid might best be provided. PAHO has prepared guidelines
for potential donors, including a list of key agency contacts for
emergency in-kind contributions. Specific guidelines on field hospitals
