Second Announcement: 1996 CUCHID COURSE: HEALTH, EQUITY & SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario

The Canadian University Consortium for Health in Development (CUCHID)
announces the third in a series of courses in international health.

Special Features of this course:

1. The course is designed in particular for individuals who are interested
in using the course modules and materials in their own learning setting:
such as a workshop, as part of an existing course, or as an "independent
study" course.

2. Learning will occur in two components:
* a "face-to-face" workshop (September 30 - October 4, 1996) to be held
  at McMaster University;
* an "at home" component, including the dynamic use of electronic
  communication; this distance learning component will begin in
  mid-September and continue to November 8.

3. Each participant will be asked to select a "reference population",
preferably a country in the "South";  this population will serve as a
basis for analysis and application of the various course modules.

Access to, and experience with electronic communication will be a requirement.

PRELIMINARY COURSE OUTLINE: HEALTH, EQUITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Course Objectives:

1. To understand the concepts of equity and sustainability as applied to
the field of health and development;

2. To explore some global health problems, including analytic approaches
relevant to health, equity and sustainability;

3. To conduct a situation analysis on a "reference population",
typically a country, using the analytic approaches featured in the
course and focusing on a specific problem or issue.

Course Modules:
These are grouped in three clusters:

Analytic Approaches:
* Economic analysis ("Economic Structural Adjustment Programs" - ESAP)
* Analysis of Cultural Appropriateness
* Burden of Illness Analysis
* Cost-efficiency Analysis

Pandemics & Problems:
* Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV
* Trauma & Violence (including the impact of "militarism" on human health)
* Tobacco and sustainable development
* Health and the environment

Application to Groups and Populations:
* Gender, equity and development
* Health of children
* Country situation analysis
* Other vulnerable groups

The workshop will take place at McMaster University in Hamilton and is
open to academic, NGOs, and graduate students, from international health
field or other relevant disciplines.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor of science degree in sanitary,
environmental or civil engineering or environmental sciences
(biology or ecology) with a master's degree in public
health, sanitary engineering, environmental engineering or
environmental sciences (biology or ecology).
Experience: At national level: Seven years of progressively
more responsible experience in positions in public health
and /or environmental health, workers’ health, water supply
and sanitation, or promotion and protection of environmental
quality.
At international level: Two years of experience in providing
technical cooperation and/or participating in projects and
activities in health and the environment in developing
countries of the Region.
Languages: Very good knowledge of Spanish with a working
knowledge of English.

Division/Program/Office: Disease Prevention and Control (HCP)

Basic Salary: US$45,413 at single rate, US$48,824 with primary dependents
(per annum net of taxes).  Post adjustment: US$11,035 at single rate,
US$11,864 with primary dependents (per annum net of taxes).
Hardship/Mobility: US$5,277 at single rate, US$7,036 with primary dependents
(per annum net of taxes).

Education: An M.D. degree and a master’s degree in epidemiology or public
health with an emphasis in epidemiology or a Ph.D. degree in a health
related science with specialized postgraduate training in epidemiology or
public health.
Experience: At national level: Seven years of experience with managerial
responsibilities on epidemiological and disease prevention and control
programs. Experience should include the administration of health services
related to communicable diseases and the application of primary health care
strategy. Expertise in the control of tropical diseases such as Chagas’
disease, dengue, and malaria would be an asset.
At international level: Two years of participation in technical cooperation
programs and activities in epidemiology, disease control, and/or health
services administration, involving more than one country.
Languages: Very good knowledge of Spanish with a working knowledge of English.
