You are cordially invited to attend a policy workshop entitled
"Communicating Research to Publics and Policy Makers", proudly hosted by the
Centre for Urban Health Initiatives and the Wellesley Central Health
Corporation.
The next generation of researchers is being called on to communicate their
results in a context that is much larger than the traditional ivory tower.
This panel workshop will initiate conversation about successful strategies
for communicating research to the public and policy makers. Three expert
panelists will offer their perspective on the best practices for effective
knowledge communication in their areas of expertise. An open forum
following the panel presentations will engage the audience in discussion.
PANELISTS:
Judith Maxwell, Founding President and Research Fellow, Canadian Policy
Research Networks (CPRN)
Judith Maxwell is the founding President of the Canadian Policy Research
Networks. She has extensive experience in both public and private sector
think tanks, and has established a national reputation as an expert on how
social and economic policy choices must complement each other. Judith has
served as Director of Policy Studies at the C.D. Howe Institute, as
Associate Director of the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University,
and as Chair of the Economic Council of Canada where she had a mandate to
advise government on mid- and long-term economic policy. She is a member of
the Order of Canada, and has honorary degrees from seven Canadian
universities.
Mike Gasher, Associate Professor, Department of Journalism at Concordia
University
A former newspaper reporter and editor, Mike Gasher is an associate
professor in the Department of Journalism at Concordia University in
Montreal. His research interests include news geography, health reporting
and issues of media representation. Mike is the co-author of Mass
Communication in Canada (Oxford University Press, 2004), and co-editor of
two recent collections: Converging Media, Diverging Politics: A Political
Economy of News Media in the United States and Canada (Lexington Books,
2005), and Contracting Out Hollywood: Runaway Productions and Foreign
Location Shooting (Rowman & Littlefield, 2005).
Paul Muldoon, Executive Director, Canadian Environmental Law Association
(CELA)
Paul Muldoon holds a Masters of Law degree from McGill University and a
Masters of Arts degree from McMaster University. He is a member of the
Advisory Committee on the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and
has participated in the review and implementation of the CEPA since 1994.
Paul has written several articles and books on topics including
environmental rights and international environmental law. He has sat on
various advisory boards, including the Science Advisory Board to the
International Joint Commission. Paul teaches courses related to
environmental law at the University of Toronto and York University.
