Over the past several weeks the University has been the target of a series
of fraudulent email attacks that have attempted to gain access to York
email accounts by posing as the University's email administrators asking
for password information.
A small number of people have responded to these messages resulting in
their email accounts being taken over and used to send spam email. While
we quickly disable these compromised accounts, enough spam email has been
sent that several commercial email services have temporarily "blocked"
email from York. The largest of these is MSN/:hotmail.
We are working with these companies to restore our ability to exchange
email, and on tactics to block further email attacks.
