Dear CANCHID Subscribers:

Alice Han's attachment for the Student Organization Research Program Application
did not get posted because the CANCHID listserv deletes attachments as insurance
against virus-laden email. I have changed the CANCHID listsettings for the
moment to post the application file. I am including a text version of the
SORP Application in this message.

I will send a second message with the .doc file attached. The list can have
trouble with some attachments so it may turn up as text in MIME code (sorry!).
If that happens you will have to live with the earlier text version.

Student Organization Research Program Pilot Trial

2005/2006

PROGRAM OUTLINE

The Student University Network on Social and International Health (SUNSIH) in
partnership with the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) is
pleased to announce the pilot run of the Student Organization Research Program
(SORP). SORP aims to enable undergraduate level student organizations to include
a research program into their already existing range of summer projects. This
partnership between SUNSIH and CCGHR would provide interested student
organizations with the resources and training needed to conduct effective,
relevant research which will hopefully address some of the concerns with regards
to the level of positive impact of current summer projects.

SORP is a year long program which involves a close working relationship between
an individual student or student team associated with a SUNSIH-member student
organization and a research mentor from the CCGHR. The research mentor may be a
faculty member at a Canadian university or a research team member of a
Non-Governmental Organization. SORP would be conducted in three phases:

1.
Project Development Week
2.
Mentorship
3.
Project and Write-up

This program is intended to be national in nature and open to all SUNSIH-member
organization. However, for the purposes of development, a pilot trial focused in
South-Eastern Ontario will be conducted for 2005/2006. The pilot trial of the
program will aim to include a maximum of 10 students.

The first component of the program, the Project Development Week, will be a week
long symposium of workshops to be held in the last week of August. The purpose
of this week is to introduce students to their research mentor and develop an
action plan for the year including potential research questions and
identification of necessary skills and training required prior to the project
implementation.

The tentative date and location of the workshops for the pilot project
will be August 27 – September 3, 2005 at the University of Toronto.

The second component of the program, the Mentorship phase, will be ongoing
throughout the academic year. The student and researcher will work together to
develop the research proposal, obtain appropriate departmental and ethics board
approvals and fundraise the costs of the project. Given the nature of the work
and the supervision, it is hoped that the student will be able to receive
appropriate academic credit for this phase of the project through their home
institution.

The final phase will be implementation of the project, either independently by
the student or in collaboration with the researcher’s team depending on the
circumstances. The year long program will conclude with an analysis and write-up
which can hopefully be submitted for publication.

ELIGIBILITY

Individual or team applicants must be:
1.
Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status
2.
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (including medicine)
3.
Supported by the SUNSIH-member student organization of their home institution
4.
Interested and motivated in global health research in a demonstrable way
5.
Committed and available for the duration of all components of the SORP program
including the Project Development Week and the Project Implementation in the
following summer
6.
Be willing to be involved in post-program follow-up activities including
write-ups and evaluation
7.
Part of ongoing relationship with Low and Middle Income countries or show
willingness to enter a research team with such a relationship

APPLICATION PROCESS

The first step of the application process will involve a letter of interest. The
letter of interest is to be filled out by the particular student or student team
that is interested in conducting the project. The letter must be endorsed by the
student organization. There is no limit as to the number of students or student
teams that a SUNSIH member organization can endorse. Furthermore, given timeline
and student turnover issues, it would be feasible for the project to be
implemented by an individual student or team member that had not yet been
selected or was not involved with previous components of the program including
the Project Development Week. The member organization will decide when such a
transition would be necessary and would be responsible for its implementation in
such a way that none of the program requirements are compromised.

Students or Student-teams with projects that are deemed feasible and suitable
for the pilot program will be subsequently notified and a complete application
will be requested in June/July 2005. A maximum of 10 students will be selected
based on these applications and will commence the 2005/2006 Pilot Program with
the Project Development Week in August.
