ABOUT THE E-DISCUSSION
An e-discussion on global public health will be hosted on MDGNet (
http://www.undg.org/index.cfm?P=99) from 29 January - 26 February 2009.
It
is being organized jointly by the Department for Economic and Social
Affairs (UN/DESA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
in
collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The purpose of
the
moderated online forum is to bring together experts in the field, from
within and outside of the UN system, to discuss (1) strengthening health
systems, in particular how to overcome health inequities and ensure
universal access, and what concrete steps can be taken to address the
shortage of health-care workers (Part I: 29 January - 11 February), and
(2)
emerging and future health challenges, specifically, the growing burden
of
non-communicable diseases, the impact of the financial crisis on health
care, and improving health partnerships (Part II: 12 - 26 February). The
discussion presents an opportunity for the broader development
community,
in particular those working at the country level, to provide a valuable
contribution to the UN intergovernmental process that takes place
through
the ECOSOC family of organizations. The ideas and recommendations
collected
may be considered for inclusion in the report of the Secretary-General
on
the Annual Ministerial Review, and will be made widely available on the
internet and at ECOSOC's substantive session in July.
