I actually thought of that "moderation" bon mot myself and was very proud till realized how many others had said it already. 
My guess is that a lot of these Who-said-it-first? issues are like that: just about everybody has. 
Except for that  Twain quote about smoking. Who else but ol' Sam was capable of that?

attributed to Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde and Horace Porter...did Twain
say it?

I've also seen this one attributed to Twain:
