The Sundquist essay referring to the lynching of Italians started out in the collection of essays on Pudd'nhead Wilson edited by Susan Gilman and Forrest Robinson in 1990. It was recast and incorporated into his To Wake the Nations. This essay is a model of the new historicism properly and illuminatingly applied to Mark Twain.

I have feeling Eric Sundquist has written at length on the Puddn'head Wilson Italian connection in one of his books (To Wake the Nations). Not entirely sure though. Pete

Does anyone know of, and perhaps can direct my attention to the location of=
, a couple of minor pieces by MT --both mentioned by the late Lou Budd in h=
is still amazingly relevant and useful book MT: Social Philosopher:

"Brief Biography of the Government" & "A Difficult Conundrum"? (both around=
 the turn of century)

Prof. Budd also asserts in this book that Puddn'head Wilson's use of lynch=
ing was somehow spurred onward by the infamous lynching of eleven Italians =
in New Orleans, March 1891, but he gives no reason for this assertion. Any=
ideas about this possible connection; or evidence that Twain had this spec=
ific incident in mind as he wrote PW?

thanks, -hb
