Grace,
I recently attended a one-day professional development workshop at the
University of Waterloo entitled "Leading People to Effectiveness". It was
designed and delivered by Gerry Call, a Human Resources management
consultant in private practice.

His perspective involved developing leadership (and following skills!)
within organizations and across lines of authority. Participants used an
evidence-based "Dimensions of Leadership Profile" tool to evaluate their own
leadership attributes, a collegues' or the leadership needs in a given
situation. Leadership attributes were typified based on an individual's
focus of attention (character, analysis, accomplishment, interaction).
Leadership dimensions, such as performing, judgement, integrity etc,
characterize each of these 4 foci. Most people so not fit neatly into the
model, but one is able to get a good understanding of where their strengths
generally lie.

The workshop raised my awareness of my own leadership strengths, allowed
time to reflect on the strengths within my work team and size up attributes
needed for the health promotion work I am currently involved with. I was
also left with a practical tool to use when deciding what leadership
strengths work situations demand, which may be very useful if in a position
of authority with responsibility for delegating work assignments.

Further information about the workshop available from www.dce.uwaterloo.ca

Subject: Leadership Development Programs - list member experiences

Hello Colleagues

I would be interested to hear (on or off list) of anyone who has experience
of providing or participating in a Leadership Development Program that has
assisted them in their health promotion roles, especially at senior levels.

What was your experience of the model used for the program (eg intensive one
week program followed by weekly mentoring etc)? the curriculum/content? the
range and backgrounds of participants? the faculty delivering the program?
value in terms of career?

Many thanks - looking forward to your replies!
