Knowledge Translation Specialist 

Cochrane Musculoskeletal Group, Institute for Population Health, University of Ottawa

 

The Cochrane Musculoskeletal Group (CMSG, www.cochranemsk.org <http://www.cochranemsk.org/> ) based at the University of Ottawa, Institute of Population Health is seeking a Knowledge Translation Specialist to promote the awareness and use of systematic reviews of the CMSG, to communicate research from those reviews, and to coordinate other research projects in the area of knowledge translation and musculoskeletal diseases.  This position can be full-time and start in April 2007. 

 

The Cochrane Musculoskeletal Group (CMSG) is one review group of the Cochrane Collaboration.  The Cochrane Collaboration is an international network of individuals and organizations committed to preparing, maintaining and disseminating systematic reviews of health care interventions (www.cochrane.org <http://www.cochrane.org/> ).  The CMSG is a group of health care professionals, researchers and consumer representatives that work together to prepare, maintain and promote reviews of the effects of health care treatments for musculoskeletal conditions.  The systematic reviews from the CMSG are relevant to a wide range of target audiences including health care professionals, health care consumers and policy makers. 

 

The CMSG is based at the Institute of Population Health (IPH), University of Ottawa (www.iph.uottawa.ca <http://www.iph.uottawa.ca/> ), with 3 other Cochrane entities providing a collegial and supportive environment.  Dr. Peter Tugwell leads the CMSG and a variety of other projects in musculoskeletal diseases and knowledge translation, which provides opportunities to become involved in other research projects in these fields.  This position reports directly to Dr. Peter Tugwell.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The CMSG is seeking to maintain and improve communication with and involvement of its three target audiences: health care consumers, health care professionals and policy makers. 

Research: Develop and implement activities to ensure translation of new knowledge created in systematic reviews. Support the activities of the Review Group Coordinator of the CMSG to prepare, write, and publish CMSG systematic reviews.  Coordinate projects related to musculoskeletal research and knowledge translation. 

Communication and Coordination: Liaise with potential users of CMSG reviews.  Coordinate the CMSG consumer group in collaboration with the volunteer Consumer Coordinator of the CMSG and manage consumer peer review of CMSG systematic reviews.  Write plain language summaries of and decision aids using CMSG systematic reviews.  Maintain and update the CMSG website and other communication products, including newsletters.  Write manuscripts and present work at international and national conferences and seminars.  Coordinate teleconferences and meetings. 

Training: Identify the learning needs and develop capacity in members of the consumer group. Organise and run training workshops with consumers and other potential users. 

 

Skills and experience required:

The incumbent must be a self-starter with demonstrated organisational skills needed to complete a high volume of work within tight deadlines.  Excellent English oral and written communication skills, including computer competency (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, electronic mail) are essential.  Ability to work independently to manage activities and time, as well as work as a team member is necessary.  Knowledge of and experience with systematic review/meta-analysis methodology, and familiarity with the CIHR knowledge translation mandate is preferred.  Bilingualism is not required, but considered an asset.

 

Education:

Individuals with a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline in addition to significant communication and coordination experience are invited to apply. A Master's degree in a related field is an asset.
