NGO and ASO Representative for Small Grants Fund Steering Committee

 

On World AIDS Day 2004 Minister for International Cooperation, Hon Aileen
Carroll, announced $2.5 million over two years for the CIDA Small Grants
Fund (SGF) for innovative HIV/AIDS projects focusing on gender equality. The
project will be managed jointly by the Canadian Society for International
Health (CSIH) and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD).
CSIH and ICAD are now seeking volunteers to sit on a nine member SGF
Steering Committee. A time commitment of up to 10 days per year will be
expected. Participation in the Steering Committee is open to staff or
volunteers associated with a Canadian ASO or NGO. The term of the
appointment is estimated to be from early July 2005 to December 2007
(pending final approval of the SGF by CIDA). For further information contact

Health Economist Specialist for Bangladesh Program (CIDA) 

 

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is seeking a qualified
Health Economist Specialist to assist with planning and implementing its
health program in Bangladesh, from an economic perspective. This will
include, but will not be limited to assistance in the development potential
components for the Health, Nutrition and Population Sector Program (HNPSP);
contribution to the drafting of the related Project Approval Documents
(PAD), Management Strategies, Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and associated
documents; and, advise, from an economic perspective, on various health
approaches CIDA may consider and/or on various health projects CIDA may

Invitation to Conference JUNE 22 Looking at Debt Deal and G8

 

The Challenges of Debt and Poverty Eradication in Africa: the Gleneagles G8
Summit You are invited to join Canadian and African representatives as we
sort out the details of the debt cancellation package announced at this
weekend's G7 Finance Minister's meeting and look at the challenges ahead for
G8 leaders as well as the for poverty eradication in Africa. This conference
will feature analysis from Government of Canada officials and Canadian civil
society representatives of what's on the table for Gleneagles.  Importantly,
it will feature analysis from two African representatives who will give
their perspectives on the challenges facing Africa. The Gleneagles Summit is
a key opportunity for the recommendations of the Commission for Africa to
take force, and our goal with this conference is to build awareness of what

Position available at the Southern African AIDS Trust

 

The Southern African AIDS Trust (SAT) is searching for a new Executive
Director.  The current incumbent leaves SAT at the end of July 2005.  The
"Southern African AIDS Training (SAT) Programme" was developed in 1990 and
managed by the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), supported through
a financial contribution from the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA).  In 2003, as one of the programme's expected results, the 'Southern
African AIDS Trust' was established and registered as a charitable
organization in Zimbabwe.  SAT became a non-profit company in South Africa
in 2005, where its regional secretariat is now located (Johannesburg).
SAT's strategy is to promote, facilitate and support community initiatives
to improve and scale up their responses to HIV and AIDS.  SAT has nearly 15
years experience of grant making to CBOs and NGOs and operates a
south-to-south skills-training, lesson-sharing, mentoring relationship
mechanism called 'School Without Walls' (SWW). The SAT vision is to be the
lead CBO/NGO support provider in southern Africa.  The deadline for
applicants to this position has been extended beyond June 6, 2005 and will

Unite for Sight is Searching for Volunteers

 

Unite For Sight has many new volunteer opportunities in Africa, Asia, Latin
America, and Eastern Europe for Summer 2005, Fall 2005, and Spring 2006.
Opportunities are available in rural villages, urban locations, and refugee
camps (including in the tsunami region).  Unite For Sight volunteers
implement outreach programs to prescribe eyeglasses, implement eye health
education, and screen for cataracts, pterygium, and other eye diseases. All
patients with eye disease are referred to the closest quality eye clinic for
diagnosis, treatment, and surgery. This new form of delivery enables
sustainable programs while simultaneously reducing all of the barriers to
health care, including financial, transportation, and education hindrances.
Unite For Sight's model also reduces costs and expands the ability of all
people to "Unite For Sight" and help in the fight against blindness. The
Unite For Sight programs are open to individuals 18 years and older, and
there is no upper age limit. Undergraduate and graduate students, public
health professionals, nurses, educators, optometrists, and ophthalmologists

Position available as a technical assistant in Mali 

 

The Unit for International Health of the University of Montreal and the
Centre Hospitalier of the University of Montreal is searching for a
technical assistant in the health sector for a position in Mali supporting a
team working on a health program. The qualifications of the candidate should
be a background in medicine or in public health, experience in the
management of health services or in health and development services as well
as experience in implementing research into action or in international
health. The program, being implemented by the Unit for International Health
in collaboration with CARE Canada and the Canadian Society for International
Health, involves the improvement of reproductive health at the community
level in the region of Kayes in Mali. The project has been in place since
October of 2003. The Canadian technical assistant would work closely with
the Department of Health of the rein of Kayes and would be employed until
December 2007. The applicant must be fluent in French. For more information,

Canadian Conference on International Health, November 6th to 9th 2005

 

The Canadian Conference on International Health will take place in Ottawa at
the Crowne Plaza Hotel, November 6th to 9th, 2005. The theme of this year's
conference is Your Money or Your Life: Health in the Global Economy. There
will be many exciting guest speakers including Canadian Ambassador to the
United Nations, Allan Rock and on the first day of the Conference will be
the Day of Canadian Global Health Research put on by the Canadian Coalition
