As a list administrator for CLICK4HP I'd like to apologize for having
missed seeing the unfortunate loop of "out of office" (O-O-O) messages
that went out to CLICK4HP list subscribers from one subscriber until late
this afternoon. I've made a change in that subscriber's settings to have
postings go first to list administration for approval - not ideal, but a
way to prevent these loops. We have filters in the listserv system to try
and catch many of the out-of-office replies and other automated messages
from going out to the list. However some email systems are impervious to
these filters, and the listservers cannot control content.

The best approach is for subscribers to control their listserv
subscriptions and their email system settings. Here's a couple of
approaches:

1. If you are going to be away from the office for several days, weeks or
longer you could change your listserv subscription options to NO MAIL for
the time you are gone. To do this, send an untitled (no Subject) message
to the listserv computer - [log in to unmask]
In the body of the message type in only
SET CLICK4HP NOMAIL
When you return, you can send a message to the same address and reinstate
your subscription by sending a message without a subject to
[log in to unmask] that has the simple command of SET CLICK4HP MAIL

2. You can do all the above online at http://www.click4hp.ca by clicking
on Manage your subscription, and then following the prompts (including
getting a password if you do not have one) to change your subscription
settings.
Or you can contact the list administrator at [log in to unmask] for help.

3. If you are a list subscriber and you do not wish to see the
out-of-office messages, then you could set up a filter in your email
program to automatically delete (or transfer to junk mail) messages with
"out of office" and "out of the office' in the Subject line. How exactly
you do this depends on your email program -- it might be called filters,
or rules, or something like that. The process is usually quite easy once
you find out what it's called and where the settings can be set.

Once again, sorry that there was such a bombardment of unnecessary
messages. Hopefully, that problem has been fixed, at least for now.

Let's have more news, questions and dialogue on this list!
