Subject: NGOs and Health Research Workshop invitation and survey

September 2004

NGOs and Health Research: Challenges and Opportunities for Canada

Dear NGO Colleague:

On behalf of the Research Committee of the Canadian Society for
International Health (CSIH), we are writing to invite you to be part of an
exciting and important initiative.

Hopefully you are already aware of the upcoming annual conference of the
CSIH scheduled for October 24-27 in Ottawa. The theme this year is "The
Politics of Health: Whose Reality Counts?" Details of the conference and
registration can be found on the CSIH website at : www.csih.org.

As part of this conference, we are holding a workshop on Monday October 25
at 2 pm entitled NGOs and Health Research: Challenges and Opportunities
for Canada. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for
networking and capacity strengthening for NGOs who are either already
involved, or might consider getting involved in some form of global health
research. "Research involvemen" by NGOs may be direct or indirect, and
may include baseline assessments, project evaluations and other project
management tools.

We also expect participation from key funding agencies such as CIDA, CIHR,
Health Canada, etc as well as Canadian Universities and Research Centres.
Our desire is to explore the challenges and opportunities that confront
Canadian based NGOs when it comes to expanding their involvement in GHR.
NGOs have been recognized as valued partners in health research for
development and our desire is to advocate for and encourage an increased
involvement by NGOs in the broad spectrum of activities that constitute
"research", running from knowledge creation to its effective use.

And this is where we invite your participation.

First, we would extend a warm invitation to you and others from your NGO
to plan now on attending this workshop.

Secondly, we would ask that you take a few minutes to complete the
attached survey and return it by mail, fax or email
(by September 30, 2004) to:

Dr. J. Yates,
2156 Sunnyvale Dr.,
Oakville, Ontario,
L6L 1W7

In advance of the workshop we are pulling together an inventory of
Canadian based NGOs currently involved in one way or another in health
research. While we know that much is already being done, we believe that
an inventory of this sort could serve as a very useful tool in support of
future networking and collaboration. It would also provide a platform for
advocacy by building greater awareness of the rich potential that exists
for NGOs to expand their contribution to GHR. Many NGOs were contacted
when the paper The Role of NGOs in Global Health Research for Development
was written by members of the Research Committee but an inventory has not
yet been compiled. The abstract from this paper is attached for your
interest.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the attached survey
and returning it to us. And again…we hope to see you in October for
this very important workshop.

Please circulate this invitation and survey to other organizations that
may be interested in participating.

Sincerely,

John Yates MD and Hélène Delisle
on behalf of the CSIH Research Committee
