Call for Papers: Communication and HIV/AIDS Working Group
IAMCR Conference, Human Rights and Communication
Mexico City, July 21-24 2009

The Communication and HIV/AIDS Working Group invites submissions for the
IAMCR 2009 Conference in Mexico City, under the theme ³Human Rights and
Communication². We invite papers that reflect both theoretical and
methodological challenges in HIV/AIDS communication research and practice,
including abstracts reflecting upon and presenting results from
on-the-ground communication experiences. Papers, be they from theory or
practice, should reflect upon the communication dimensions of the fight
against HIV/AIDS. This may include, for example, policy challenges,
implications of socio-economic or cultural contexts, the role of treatment
in communication, campaign fatigue, governance and accountability issues.
Please consider the implications of your paper for HIV/AIDS communication
theory and/or practice. At least one session during the conference will be
devoted to HIV/AIDS communication and human rights.

We are particularly interested in papers that present innovative approaches
to HIV/AIDS communication theory and practice, moving beyond analysing
traditional ABC campaigns (Abstinence, Being Faithful, and using Condoms).
Particularly, we are interested in papers that take a critical approach to
HIV/AIDS communication, exploring the interdisciplinary, multi-dimensional
nature of the epidemic. As such, we hope to see more abstracts that move
beyond traditional health communication models, and reflect upon the
diversity of approaches to communication, including, for instance, social
change communication, citizen/alternative/radical media approaches,
participatory communication, advocacy communication, folk media and other
cultural approaches, etc.

Both individual abstracts and panel proposals are encouraged. The sessions
of the working group will be divided as suits emerging themes from
abstracts. However, we are also interested in panel proposals, or papers
that could contribute to panels on: gender and HIV/AIDS communication,
faith-based organizations and HIV/AIDS communication and, donors/policy and
HIV/AIDS communication.

Logistics & Deadlines
Joint sessions with other relevant sections and working groups can be
