Yesterday Bob, Barb, Henry, and I had a phone meeting with
the folks at the U.S. Mint about the production of the coins.
Looks like they will be available in the spring, and we will be
spreading the word. Naturally, we want them to sell out. If
that happens each site would net $1.75 million. Nothing to
sneeze at! We will keep you posted here and elsewhere.

Thanks to Barbara Schmidt for sharing our efforts to raise
funds in a collaborative fashion. As I have said to many of you -
eyeball to eyeball - if you already donate to one or more of the
four sites in your own fashion, please continue to do so. If you
have not donated or thought about donating, this new site
lets you give to all four at once: http://www.marktwaincoins.org/

Friends, I must confess. For years I was a member of the Hartford
and Hannibal homes, but I was not a member in order to be a
supporter. I just wanted to be a member of a Mark Twain fan club.
I had no idea until I began volunteering in Hannibal that either home
needed funding. (I grew up in a house where my parents sent money
to missionaries, but I never had a clue about the non-profit world
of museums and such.) When I realized the homes were not funded
by the government, etc., I was surprised, then embarrassed. These
four sites - Berkeley, Elmira, Hannibal, and Hartford - do some heavy
lifting in terms of keeping our beloved SLC alive in the public eye.
But they rely HEAVILY on donations. Please do not think the
amount of the donation matters. It does not! Please consider giving
any amount at marktwaincoins.org. I know I speak for my three
wonderful colleagues when I assure you that ANY amount is
deeply appreciated. And to those of you who already have
established giving routines - thank you! No need to change those!

In closing, some of you have talked about planned giving with me
at some point. If you have not, again, I speak on behalf of these four
sites: please consider a legacy gift to benefit all four sites. I have. I
cannot imagine a future where the four sites have to struggle as they
do today. Endowments are critical. Every little bit helps.

I send this with my sincere gratitude. Please feel free to share the
site with others who love Mark Twain.

Cindy Lovell

P.S. I hope to see you all at the Clemens Conference in Hannibal.
I will be there with three Hartford staff members. We all need to
support each other every chance we get!

There is an article by Cindy Lovell online in the June 5 issue of
Huffington Post that may be of interest. Lovell discusses the group
efforts of the major Mark Twain organizations at Hartford, Hannibal,
Elmira and Berkeley to successfully implement the Mark Twain
Commemorative Coin Act.

This group effort has now been extended to fundraising in general with
the launch of a collaborative fundraising website where donations can
be made with each site receiving an equal portion of each donation.
