PAHO TO PARTICIPATE IN BRAZILIAN HEALTH CONGRESS

PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses discussed the challenges confronting
technical cooperation agencies in a world in transition today during the
7th Brazilian Congress on Collective Health, in Brasilia. Roses' remarks
on "International Cooperation in a Globalized World" addressed emerging
debates on health, which increasingly is seen as an issue of national
security, foreign policy, macroeconomics and human rights and, above
all, as a public good of global interest. For the full press release,

PAHO CENTRE COLLABORATING IN QUALITY TOURISM FOR THE CARIBBEAN PROJECT

The Caribbean is the most tourism-dependent region in the world with
many of the fragile economies relying on the industry for the majority
of their economic activity. PAHO's Caribbean Epidemiology Center has
developed a Quality Tourism for the Caribbean project in 13 Caribbean
countries to improve safe, healthy and hygienic conditions and resource
management practices for guests and staff in hotels and food service
establishments. In many Caribbean countries, tourism's share of the
gross domestic product is as high as 70 percent. The World Travel and
Tourism Council (WTTC) estimated Caribbean travel and tourism employment
at 2.1 million jobs or 14.1 percent of total employment in 2002. For

the Academy for Education Development, the World Bank, and USAID to

projects and achieving social change. Participants heard stories such as
the following: "Prior to implementing a public communications campaign
as part of a children's health program in Ecuador, only 28 percent of
people surveyed had had their children vaccinated. After the campaign
had been in effect for 18 months, the number jumped to 52 percent...."
