The website for the Australian National Men's Health Policy which acknowledges the centrality of the Social Determinants of male health:

www.health.gov.au/malehealthpolicy

The first of the Supporting Documents on the web page is on the Social Determinants of male health

I think it challenges some of the exisiting thinking on men's health and I recommend it. Dare I say, it helps move us all towards a more evidence-based approach to male health and away from policies and practices which are narrowly medically focused (the prostate, ED etc) or more ideological in their orientation ("Masculinity") and behaviourist - ("men behaving badly"). The document is entitled: "Building on the strengths of Australian Males".

It promises a national longitudinal study incorporating the social determinants and highlights (among other things) the scandalous state of Indigenous male health, without divorcing this from a perspective on the whole country.

Please look and discuss

Subject: [SDOH] Men's Health - the Social Determinants

Everyone interested in men's health will be delighted that the Australian Government has this week lauched a Male Health Policy which enshrines the social determinants as a framework for dealing with this issue

So we can hope to have initiatives which deal positively with young boys, fathers, older men, men in the work place etc

A move toward building societies which nurture men and develop policies based on evidence

Watch this space: I will share with anyone interested
