Does anyone know if Twain wrote a piece called `How Eli Perkins Lectured in
Pottsville' ?
Eli Perkins (aka Melville D. Landon) claimed this was published in Harpers
Magazine in the early 1870s and credits Twain as the author. I suspect
Landon himself is the author or else he is reprinting extracts of some
review published by Twain under another title, perhaps on another subject. I
find nothing in LETTERS, BAL, Tenney, Camfield, or the usual reliable
sources. My Harper Index only goes up to 1870...
Landon was a serial "borrower" of others' writings, anthologizing Twain and
others without permission in some of his books, etc., so anything's
possible.
Any clues will be greatly appreciated!
