With all respect, I must respond to that with raised eyebrows and  a fairly
loud "Huh??"  Clemens (he had not yet even started  signing himself "Mark
Twain") was an unknown out in Washoe when Thoreau died, in the spring of
1862.  Nor did Thoreau die impoverished.
