Hal,

Perhaps you also recall the phrase in the article I posted: "he attended
Whitman's 1887 eulogy for Lincoln at Madison Square Theater."

If memory serves, which it often doesn't, I seem to recall some sources
questioning this. I think this was because some newspaper accounts didn't
list Twain in their mentions of attendees. Somewhere along the line, I read
something which confirmed that Twain was indeed there. But I don't recall
any comments he may have made.
