Twain's publishing firm issued an edition of Whitman's SELECTED POEMS in 1892 and Twain showed familiarity with the controversy about his verse in a never-completed essay written around 1880. In 1887 Twain contributed to the fund for a cottage for Whitman. There were other signs, too, of Twain's interest in the poet and his welfare.
