David,
     Track down "Taming the Bicycle," an 1884 essay that hilariously 
draws upon bicycle lessons Twain attempted with Joe Twichell. Twain 
wasn't happy with it, so the piece didn't see print until it was 
published in "What Is Man? and Other Essays." But I read it out loud to 
my daughter several years ago, and it makes for a wonderful comic monologue.
