An October 14, 2011 post captioned, "From Boo! to Birthday in Carson City"
stated, "the State of Nevada has designated as a historic landmark the
homestead site Twain (then still Clemens) had filed on the lakeshore [Lake
Tahoe], where he dreamed of becoming a lumber baron, and where SC ignored
the Smokey Bear advice and started the well-known gigantic forest fire
(described in Roughing It)[.]"
According to Nevada State Historic Preservation Officer Ronald James, "My
agency has not participated in any state designation of the Clemens campsite
on the eastshore."
