I'm looking forward to this event. Mr. Hirst has been General Editor of the Mark Twain Papers longer than anyone before him. I met him when Fred Anderson was still in charge Hirst and Mr. Branch were the experts on a period of Mark Twain's life I was focusing on. Fred wrote to both of them asking what they thought of my project and they both were encouraging. (I should add that 30 years later, I finally realized I'd been on a long misadventure with Mark Twain) Later I heard a lecture Mr. Hirst gave in a classroom when he came to Berkeley, but I can't remember any details. I think perhaps he was going to join the staff at the Mark Twain Papers. I was profoundly saddened by Fred's death. I'd returned home to Sacramento for several weeks and had no idea what had happened. Mr. Hirst was Fred's successor. Eventually , I submitted some part of my research to Mr. Hirst and only remember one remark which baffled me for ages. He said something about circumstantial evidence being like finding a trout in the milk. I didn't recognize the quote and wasn't sure if it was for or against circumstantial evidence. I finally learned it was from Thoreau, and a New England friend explained that there was a time there when people watered the milk hence....
