On December 10, 1872, Train wrote Nast congratulating him for "the prodigious victory for Grant... Civilization and progress" attributable to Nast's Harper's Weekly cartoons lampooning opponent Horace Greeley's  eccentricities. As I recall Nast once tried to persuade Twain to do a joint lecture tour, combining Twain's wit with Nast's drawings. Twain turned him down. It was Paine's biography of Nast that caught Twain's attention when he hired Paine to work on the Autobiography.
