Linking multi-sectoral data sources is often deterred by information systems that are developed and maintained independently of other information systems, leading to data sets that are unconnected or ‘stove-piped.’ Through its ability to link data using common geographic identifiers, a geographic information system (GIS) can help overcome this stove-piping of data. To explore these benefits, the process of using a GIS to link family planning and reproductive health data with data from multiple sectors was conducted in Rwanda in 2011. This document provides a case study of this activity.
