Vol. 22, No. 2, 2002

The use of qualitative research to improve reproductive health is the focus
of this issue of Network. Such research is guiding research and program
design, complementing findings from quantitative studies, and exploring
issues that have received little study. Highlighted in this issue are
selected research initiatives that illustrate how this qualitative approach
is expanding our insight into numerous reproductive health areas.
Qualitative research is, for example, examining barriers to both the use of
existing contraceptives and the potential use of new contraceptive products.
It also identifies factors that impede the provision or use of services
designed to prevent, diagnose, and manage sexually transmitted infections;
seeks ways to better identify and serve victims of domestic violence; and
helps us explore why maternal mortality rates remain unacceptably high in so
many settings.

Ce numéro de Network en français est centré sur l'utilisation de la
recherche qualitative comme moyen d'améliorer la santé de la reproduction.
Ce type de recherche guide la conception d'études et de programmes, complète
les résultats des recherches quantitatives et examine des questions qui ont
reçu jusque-là peu d'attention. Ce numéro met en relief une sélection
d'initiatives de recherche qui illustrent comment cette approche qualitative
élargit notre vision de nombreux domaines de la santé de la reproduction. La
recherche qualitative étudie, par exemple, les obstacles à l'utilisation de
contraceptifs déjà existants et à l'utilisation potentielle de nouveaux.
Elle identifie aussi les facteurs qui empêchent la prestation ou
l'utilisation de services destinés à prévenir, à diagnostiquer et à prendre
en charge les infections sexuellement transmissibles. Enfin la recherche
qualitative examine les manières de mieux identifier et assister les
victimes de la violence familiale et aide à comprendre pourquoi les taux de
mortalité maternelle restent, de façon inacceptable, si élevés dans tant de
situations.
