The fall 1994 issue of Synergy, the newsletter published by the
Canadian Society for International Health, contains the following
articles:
 
"GIS - a new tool for health planners and researchers" - an outline of
the Geographic Information System, a computer-assisted information
management system of geographically-referenced data, which can provide
accurate and relevantinformation about the relationship between people,
their environment and their health.  Authors: Jim Chauvin, Luc Loslier
and Don de Savigny.
 
"Lessons without borders - a lesson for Canada?" - tells about the
program to bring to America's poor communities some of the lessons
learned by the U.S. Agency for International Development while operating
programs in the developing world.
 
"Congratulations" - to former CSIH board member Dr. Allan Ronald who was
recently appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
 
"Unravelling the mysteries of Internet, e-mail and Synergy Online" -
describing how the revitalization of Synergy On-line and how to access
Internet discussion lists.  Author: GaryEikenberry, Internet consultant
to CSIH.
 
News about CSIH's International Health Education Program, which supports
short-term student placements in developingcountries.
 
News about CSIH's Partners in Health program which places Canadian health
professionals on short-term assignments in Ukraine.
 
"Bringing Ukrainian health care into the 1990s" - information about a
recent conference in Edmonton which brought togetherhealth care
professionals, government officials and non-governmental agencies
involved with medical projects inUkraine.  Author: Olenka Melnyk.
 
An interview with CIDA's president, Hugette Labelle: "Reflections on
CIDA's role in international health."
 
Noteworthy - a section listing new resources, upcoming conferences,
and awards.
 
In Brief: three short items of news.
 
Information about World AIDS Day, National AIDS Awareness Week, and
Mental Illness Awareness Week.
 
Tips for travellers: The Disabled Traveller. Information to help the
disabled traveller have a rewarding trip.
 
"Don't drink the water..." - information about the new edition of
"Don't Drink the Water...  The complete traveller's guide to staying
healthy in warm climates," co-published by CSIH andthe Canadian Public
Health Association.
 
In Health InterAmerica, the publication published by CSIH with the
support of the Pan American Health Organization and issued free with
Synergy, there are two stories: on CARE Canada'ssanitation and
drinking water projects in Nicaragua ("A pipedream comes true in
Nicaragua") and information about Canada'sresumption of aid to Cuba
("Canada resumes aid to Cuba").
 
Synergy, published quarterly, is available from CSIH, 170 Laurier Ave.

(including mailing, handling and GST).  Regular membership in CSIH
costs $40 and this includes a free subscription to Synergy.
