Some of this has been discussed in the introduction to the California/Iowa
edition of A Connecticut Yankee, if memory serves.  If I recall correctly,
some of the conflicts of the
proposed Hawaii novel occur in A Connecticut Yankee, principally the impact
of technology on natives (once Hawaiian, then 6th century British natives).
