For more on The Emperor Norton, you might try Christopher Moore's marvelous vampire novels, set in San Francisco and featuring the Emperor:  "Blood Sucking Fiends," "You Suck," and "Bite Me."  The titles may suggest childishness but these are really wonderfully funny, as are Moore's other novels.  I'm especially fond of "Lamb," the memoirs of Christ's childhood friend, Biff.
