REPORT ON THE 10TH CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH

More than 360 people from 31 countries attended the 10th Canadian
Conference on International Health, organized by the Canadian Society
for International Health, October 26-29, 2003, in Ottawa. The
conference was opened by federal Deputy Minister of Health Ian Green and
the new Deputy Director of the Pan American Health Organization, Dr.
Joxel Garcia.

The theme this year was “The Right to Health: Influencing the Global
Agenda – How Research, Advocacy and Action Can Shape our Future.”
Presentations by some of the plenary speakers will be posted on the
website in the coming weeks.

The plenary speakers were:

Dr. James Orbinski (past international president of Medecins sans
frontieres – Doctors without Borders); Professor Mutuma Mugambi
(executive secretary of the African Health Research Forum); Professor
Paul Hunt (UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health); Maude Barlow
(national chairperson of the Council of Canadians), who received a
standing ovation for her presentation on “The Right to Health: Is it at
Risk?”; Maria del Carmen Ledo Garcia (San Simon University, Bolivia);
Jacques-Francois Martin (president of The Vaccine Fund); Dr. Judith
Bartlett (chairperson of the National Aboriginal Health Organization);
and Tessa Tan-Torres Edejer (coordinator of the unit “Choosing
Interventions: Effectiveness, Quality, Costs and Ethics” that forms part
of the World Health Organization’s Evidence and Information for Policy
cluster).

The annual Student University Network for Social and International
Health Conference was held immediately prior to the conference, along
with the 3rd annual meeting of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health
Research.

CANADIAN COALITION FOR GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research was formally launched
during the 10th Canadian Conference on International Health, and has
produced the first issue of its newsletter, Connections.

The Coalition is a not-for-profit organization that promotes more equity
in global health research and better health worldwide. Its members are
committed to helping close the “10/90 gap” – the Global Forum for Health
Research’s disturbing estimation that only about 10% of global spending
on health research is directed to diseases or conditions that effect 90%
of the world’s population.

Coalition members include global health researchers, people actively
engaged in applying research, organizations that fund health research,
and other interested individuals. The Coalition began in 2001 as an
informal network and has evolved through generous support from the
Canadian International Development Agency, the Canadian Institutes of
Health Research, Health Canada and the International Development
Research Centre.
