Greetings,
International Health Program and the Centre for International Health and
Development uOttawa announce an exciting late addition to the Hillman
Seminars in International Health and Development.
By good fortune, Dr. Gabriel Upunda, Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry
of Health, Tanzania, will be visiting Canada and has agreed to speak at
the Hillman Seminars this Monday, Oct. 30th at noon at Roger Guindon. The
topic will be "Effective and Affordable Health Systems in Africa: Drafting
a Blueprint." Thank you to CIDA for helping arrange this.
Next week's speaker is also very exciting, Dr. Ron Labonté - Canada
Research Chair in Globalization and Health will speak (Nov. 6th).
The Hillman Seminars occur every Monday at noon at the Roger Guindon Campus
(Health Sciences) 451 Smyth (attached to CHEO and the General). For more

Dr Gabriel L. UPUNDA Chief Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, Tanzania
Dr Gabriel Upunda is the Chief Medical Officer for the Ministry of Health
in Tanzania, a post he has held since 1997.
Dr Upundu, a physician, received his medical training at the University of
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1973. He subsequently worked as a District
Medical Officer and Regional Medical Officer until he left for post
graduate studies and worked as a consultant physician from 1978 to 1986
before returning to government, serving as a Regional Medical Officer
again. He was appointed head of the Primary Health Care Unit at the
Ministry of Health Head Office in 1993 and became the Director for
Hospital Services in 1995. Dr. Upunda has consulted with the World Health
Organization as a short-term professional from 1996 to 1997 and has
participated in many international meetings and projects. Dr Upunda was
Vice Chairman of the team that drafted the Health Sector Reform that is
currently being implemented in Tanzania and has been involved in the
Tanzania Essential Health Interventions Project TEHIP
Dr Upunda is renowned for his advocacy and commitment in promoting health
issues in his country.
