*** CGNA Conference to Focus on Caring for Canada’s Aging Population ***

Eldercare strategies now needed by healthcare professionals in every
field.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association (CGNA) will hold its
18th Biennial Conference entitled "Crossing Bridges: Fostering Potential
in Gerontological Nursing" from May 27-30, 2015 in Charlottetown, PEI.

Gerontology experts from across the country will share new research,
technologies and practices needed to adapt to the current and future
needs of a rapidly aging population.

"Given Canada's aging demographics, eldercare strategies are now needed
in all fields of health and well-being to improve the quality of care,
team collaboration and effectiveness of the entire healthcare system,"
says Veronique Boscart, CGNA President Elect and Conference Keynote.
"The CGNA Conference offers a great opportunity to meet clinical,
educational and research experts in eldercare and learn from others to
create strategies to strive for excellence."

Below are just a few of the innovative leaders sharing their research at
this year's conference:

Dr. Sharon Moore is a Professor in the Centre for Nursing and Health
Studies at Athabasca University. Dr. Moore's keynote address entitled "A
Bridge Called Hope" suggests that HOPE is a bridge that helps us
navigate between experiences such as joy and sadness, pain and comfort,
grief and compassion, and is an essential ingredient in Gerontological
nursing practice. The audience will be invited to consider the
importance of hope in their own work and to choose strategies they might
use to foster hope in the lives of the individuals they serve.

Dr. Veronique Boscart is the CIHR/ Schlegel Industrial Research Chair in
Seniors Care. Dr. Boscart will present a keynote address entitled:
Building a Bridge to Excellence in Seniors' Care: Promising Practices
for those who care about changing the status quo in Gerontological
nursing care. Dr. Boscart will discuss innovative thoughts and best
practices in Gerontological care and culture; strategies to walk towards
person-centered care and language, and a renewed sense of appreciation
for aging awareness, advocacy and sensitivity.

Dr. Lori Schindel Martin is the Associate Director, SRC, and Associate
Professor at Ryerson's Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing. Dr. Schindel
Martin's presentation introduces an online format of Gentle Persuasive
Approaches (GPA) into a Baccalaureate Nursing Program. Dr. Schindel
Martin will share the results of a study that exposed 500 first year
undergraduate nursing students to dementia-specific intervention GPA.
The intervention consisted of online interactive learning activities
that built upon previous GPA feasibility evaluations and resulted in
reduced fear and moral anxiety in caring for dementia patients.

Laura Wilding, Advanced Practice Nurse at The Ottawa Hospital will
present Innovative Practices from The Ottawa Hospital Geriatric Medicine
Ambulatory Services & Day Hospital. The rapid rise in the number of
adults over the age of 65 and the trend towards earlier home discharge
with community follow-up prompted the review of the Ottawa Hospital
Geriatric Medicine Ambulatory Services & Day Hospital's program. Laura's
presentation will review some of the changes and key strategies
implemented as a result of this program review.

Dr. Timothy Stultz, a Geriatrician with the Provincial Geriatric Program
in PEI will present Under the Umbrella: Understanding Dementia imparting
knowledge to help improve quality of life for people with dementia and
those who care for them. Dr. Stultz will discuss what is and isn't
normal memory loss, the causes of cognitive decline, how to identify the
different types of dementia and best practices for dementia medication
and non-medication intervention.

Alongside the popular pre-conference workshops and keynote addresses,
delegates at this three-day conference will have access to a range of
interactive sessions, oral and poster presentations on topics including
Wound Care, Falls Prevention, Continence, Personhood, Approaches to Care
and Patient Safety.
