Please note that the Network Outage originally scheduled for July 20
from 00:00 - 06:00 hrs, has been extented (see original announcement
below). The outage will begin July 19 at 21:00hrs instead of July
20 at 00:00hrs and continue until 06:00hrs (ie: the outage is
starting three hours early).
This scheduling change is necessary in order to perform emergency
software upgrades to handle a recently announced Denial of Service
(DoS) vulnerability. These upgrades will result in several service
interruptions affecting all York network users.
We apologize for any inconvenience this emergency service outage may
cause.
Questions or concerns about this note, should be directed to

Subject: Summer Network Service Interruptions
Resent-Subject: Summer Network Service Interruptions
This summer CNS will be making several changes to the York
University data network to improve various services. The changes
include:
- An upgrade to the core switches that will allow us to offer
Non-Blocking, Wirespeed Copper Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to
servers in the Steacie Machine Room.
- An upgrade in our Internet and CA*Net connectivity. This summer
York will be moving from ONet (www.onet.on.ca), to the Orion Network
(www.orion.on.ca). "ORION is a high-speed fibre optic advanced
research and education network that connects Ontario's research
institutions to one another, and to the world." This upgrade will
make it possible to increase the amount of Internet bandwidth
available, and it will dramatically increase the amount of CA*Net
bandwidth available.
- An upgrade to the AirYork wireless service that will allow people
to use the service without requiring the use of VPN software (more
details about this change will be available later in the summer).
There will also be a number of other small changes and upgrades to
ensure the reliability of the network.
These upgrades will require a number of service interruptions as
outlined below:
June 29 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs): During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting Internet and CA*Net access
for all York network users.
July 6 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs) - During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting all York network users.
July 13 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs) - During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting all York network users.
July 20 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs) - During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting all York network users.
Aug 10 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs) - During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting Internet and CA*Net access
for all York network users.
Aug 17 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs) - During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting the AirYork wireless service
for all York network users.
Aug 17 (00:00 - 06:00 hrs) - During this period there will be
several service interruptions affecting Internet and CA*Net access
for all York network users. There will also be several brief
service interruptions affecting network traffic through the
Administrative Firewall. No other network services should be
affected by these interruptions.
It's likely that there will be additional Internet/CA*Net service
interruptions when the final switchover from ONet to Orion takes
place towards the end of the summer (a final date has yet to be
scheduled).
There will also be a service interruption sometime in early August
impacting YorkNet/ResNet users as IP addresses are re-organized to
prepare for the expanded demand that the new academic year will
bring.
