I also felt queasy--and angry. Angry not only because of the message (work
hard and become a success), but because of the way that management treated
him (at least as shown in the film). i.e. park the car, pay the cab, etc.
Just the fact that someone with more money than they knew what to do with
would ask someone they know is an unpaid intern to cover them, made me
fume. Mr. Gardner just spoke at an event near me. It was more than standing
room only with spill over rooms and tv monitors in the hallways. I don't
know whether folks went hoping success would rub off on them or to honor
someone who against most (if not all) odds made it, or some other reasons,
but the turn out suggests that he and his story really resonated with
Northeastern Ohioans.
