--------------------------------------------------------
Individuals and organizations involved in disease
prevention and health promotion in all countries of the
Americas, including Canada, are invited to attend a
Symposium on National Strategies for Health for All,
sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization, the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the
Canadian Society for International Health on February 19
& 20, 1998. The symposium is being held at the
headquarters of PAHO, the Regional Office of the World
Health Organization, at 525 23 Street, N.W., Washington,
D.C.
Purpose: Health-for-All (HFA) provides a policy
framework for achieving equity, solidarity and
sustainability in health promotion and disease
prevention. The symposium is designed to stimulate the
linkage of planning processes, the renewal of Health-
for-All, and to examine the value of identifying focus
areas and setting targets for health gains in the
countries of the Americas.
Themes: Priority setting in health; Tools for public
health policy and management; Planning the prevention
agenda for the 21 century.
Learning objectives: To share local, national and
regional experiences in setting priorities and
implementing strategies; To link such strategies to key
indicators that measure progress for achieving HFA; To
lay the groundwork for setting the prevention agenda for
the next decade.
Other opportunities: To share tools on how to do
priority-setting; To exchange ideas for processes and
performance indicators; To stimulate international
cooperation agencies to coordinate their support for
public health policy development and implementation
There will be simultaneous translation, Spanish-English
and English-Spanish, in all the sessions. Information is available on the PAHO website at http://www.paho.org and also by contacting: Office of Analysis and Strategic Planning, Pan American Health Organization, Tel: 202 974 3022 Fax: 202 974 3604 E mail: [log in to unmask]

Brazilians visit Canada
--------------------------------------------------------
Health Canada played host in Ottawa to a Brazilian
delegation on January 26-27. The purpose of the visit,
facilitated by the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO), was to examine Health Canada's approach to
environmental health surveillance and to determine if
lessons learned in Canada could be applied in the
Brazilian context. Both Brazil and Canada share
problems associated surveillance involving vast
geographic areas.
From 1991 to 1996, Health Canada developed the Action
Plan on Health and the Environment (APHE) as part of the
Federal Green Plan. The programs developed through the
APHE were instrumental in helping Health Canada develop
environmental health surveillance capabilities.
The Brazilian delegation consisted of two
representatives from the Brazilian National Foundation
of Health, Albertino Alexandre Maciel and Mara Lucia
Carneiro Oliveira; the PAHO officer based in Brazil,
Jacira Cancio; and the Regional Advisor on
Environmental Health Quality, Dr. Luiz Galvao.
Presentations were made by staff from Health Canada's
Environmental Health Directorate, the Laboratory Centre
for Disease Control and the Pest Management Regulatory
Agency. The meeting was a good opportunity to share
scientific points of view and to identify areas for
potential collaboration between Brazil and Canada.
Editor's note: For those interested in learning more
about Health Canada's environmental health activities,
there is a new publication available titled, "Health and
Environment - Partners for Life". This 200-page
