Articles demonstrate how community development is central to tackling pressing mental health issues in the UK and across the globe, and must not be tokenistic add-ons. At a time when the Labour leader Ed Miliband has raised the political profile of mental health this Special Issue and launch conference will be of interest to educators, practitioners, campaigners and researchers across the mental health, health policy and community development fields:
- Mick Carpenter and Thara Raj call for a paradigm shift from community care to community development
- Patience Seebohm, Alison Gilchrist and David Morris show how community development contributes to mental health and inclusion
- Gary Craig and Reg Walker critically review the UK Government's Delivering Race Equality Programme
- Angus McCabe and Ann Davis link community development to mental health promotion
- Lydia Lewis links the capabilities approach, adult learning and mental health
Free Launch Event You are invited to a free Launch Conference to discuss these and other articles, and debate the policy and practice implications. Special guest speaker is Lynne Friedli, author of WHO Report Mental Health, Resilience and Inequalities.
