Recognizing that HIV risk is shaped by a complex web of social,
economic, and legal factors that affect women, men, girls, and boys
differently, many in the development community have long been calling
for the integration of gender-specific strategies to combat the spread
of HIV. Following the 2009 release of its compendium of 31 programs in
Africa that have successfully integrated multiple gender strategies in
Sub-Saharan Africa, AIDSTAR-One documented five programs in Zambia,
South Africa, Rwanda, Mozambique and Kenya through in-depth case
studies. These case studies explore the successes and challenges in
designing and implementing HIV programs that integrate multiple
approaches to gender in a range of contexts.
