Advocating for the social determinants of health & health equity? Join the conversation
Where: www.nccdh.ca/community
When: June 16 - 18, 2015

This week the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health are talking about the challenge of undertaking social advocacy as a central mission and significant responsibility for public health professionals.

We will use the new NCCDH publication Let's Talk: advocacy and health equity (http://nccdh.ca/resources/entry/lets-talk-advocacy-and-health-equity) as the jumping off point. Our public health advocacy examples will include:

ˇ Dr. Kora DeBeck (Simon Fraser University) - The 2011 Supreme Court decision in support of Insite, the Vancouver safe injection site program http://supervisedinjection.vch.ca/

ˇ Dr. Lisa Simon (Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit) - The recent "annual minimum income" position statements adopted by the Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit in Ontario : http://bit.ly/1Qmg5Yf and the Association for Local Public Health Agencies (http://www.alphaweb.org/)

ˇ Dr. Patty Daly and Dr. Mark Lysyshyn - The case made by Vancouver Coastal Health for a healthy transportation policy in advance of the 2015 Vancouver referendum http://vchblogs.ca/transportation-referendum-health-benefits/
We will also be talking about partnering with the business community on public health advocacy, building on points raised by Coro Strandberg, a corporate sustainability consultant, in her recent blog: http://corostrandberg.com/blog

Please join us to engage with our guests online and on the webinar around the following questions:

ˇ What are the four advocacy roles for public health? How do they apply to each type of social advocacy?

ˇ What have we learned from our public health advocacy efforts in the area of healthy public transit policy?

ˇ How can public health engage non-traditional partners, including the business sector, in advocacy?
