Global Forum gathers international health leaders in Atlantic Canada to discuss health 
promotion & sustainable development

The 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion, October 16-17 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward 
Island, Canada, will highlight the strategies and achievements of communities, 
organizations and health promotion leaders working locally to achieve global impact. 
Organized by a team of international and Canadian health promotion organizations, 
including the Alliance for Health Promotion (Geneva), The Quaich (Charlottetown) and 
Groupe entreprises en santé (Montreal), the theme of the 6th Global Forum is Health 
Promotion ~ At the Very Heart of Sustainability. 
	
Central to the 6th Global Forum’s programming are the five principles of the Ottawa 
Charter, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the United Nations 
Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015, world leaders at the UN Sustainable Development 
Summit adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, fight inequality and 
injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. Although 15 years is a short time to achieve 
these goals, huge strides are being made through civil society initiatives in health 
promotion.  And the impact is both local and global.

Gabriella Sozanski, coordinator with the Alliance, looks forward to welcoming international 
delegates in Charlottetown, alongside the Forum’s Canadian hosts: “The Global Forum is 
known for uniting community and government leaders, policy makers, researchers and 
practitioners from across sectors to share knowledge and build partnerships. Hosting the 
Forum in Canada in 2016 will bring a new dimension to our discussions and strengthen 
connections among health promotion leaders in Canada and abroad.”

Preliminary program highlights include keynote speaker Zsuzsanna Jakab from WHO 
Europe, as well as invited speakers who are trailblazers in the field of health promotion. 
Participants will take part in the creation of the PEI Declaration, a declaration calling for 
increased investment in health promotion to be submitted to the WHO’s 9th Global 
Conference on Health Promotion in Shanghai in November.

The 6th Global Forum is an initiative of the Alliance for Health Promotion, an NGO in official 
relations with the WHO that works to bridge the gap between international declarations 
and local realities. This is the first time the event is being held outside of Europe, and the 
Alliance is thrilled to be hosted by the Government of Prince Edward Island for the 
occasion, with PEI’s Department of Health and Wellness as an official sponsor.

Les dirigeants internationaux dans le domaine de la santé se réuniront au Canada pour 
faire le point sur la promotion de la santé et le développement durable lors d’un forum 
mondial

Le 6e Forum mondial sur la promotion de la santé, qui aura lieu à Charlottetown, Île-du-
Prince-Édouard, au Canada, les 16 et 17 octobre prochains mettra en valeur les stratégies 
et les réalisations des collectivités, des organismes et des chefs de file de la promotion de 
la santé qui travaillent localement pour créer un impact mondial. Organisé par une équipe 
d’organismes nationaux et internationaux de promotion de la santé, notamment l’Alliance 
pour la promotion de la santé (Genève), The Quaich Inc. (Charlottetown) et le Groupe 
entreprises en santé (Montréal), le thème du 6e Forum mondial est La promotion de la 
santé : au cœur même de la durabilité. 

Les cinq principes de la Charte d’Ottawa, qui célèbre son 30e anniversaire cette année, et 
les objectifs de développement durable des Nations Unies sont au cœur de la 
programmation du 6e Forum mondial. En 2015, des chefs de file mondiaux réunis à 
l’occasion du Sommet des Nations Unies sur le développement durable ont adopté les 17 
objectifs de développement durable afin de mettre fin à la pauvreté, de lutter contre les 
inégalités et l’injustice, et de faire face au changement climatique d’ici 2030. Bien que 15 
ans soit un court laps de temps pour atteindre ces objectifs, d’énormes progrès ont été 
réalisés au niveau de la promotion de la santé par l’entremise d’initiatives de la société 
civile. Et les impacts se font sentir à l’échelle locale et mondiale.

Gabriella Sozanski, coordonnatrice de l’Alliance, a hâte d’accueillir les délégués 
internationaux à Charlottetown, avec les hôtes canadiens du Forum : « Le Forum mondial a 
la réputation de rassembler des leaders communautaires et des hauts dirigeants du 
gouvernement, des décideurs, des chercheurs et des praticiens de divers secteurs pour 
échanger des connaissances et bâtir des partenariats. La tenue du Forum au Canada en 
2016 ajoutera une nouvelle dimension aux discussions et renforcera les liens entre les 
chefs de file de la promotion de la santé au Canada et à l’étranger. »

Parmi les points saillants du programme préliminaire, mentionnons l’allocution de 
Zsuzsanna Jakab du bureau européen de l’OMS, ainsi que les présentations de 
conférenciers qui sont des pionniers dans le domaine de la promotion de la santé. Les 
participants prendront part à la création de la Déclaration de l’Î.-P.-É, une déclaration 
exigeant des investissements accrus dans la promotion de la santé, qui sera déposée lors 
de la 9e Conférence mondiale sur la promotion de la santé de l’OMS à Shanghai en 
novembre.

Le 6e Forum mondial est une initiative de l’Alliance pour la promotion de la santé, une 
organisation non gouvernementale (ONG) internationale qui a pour mission de renforcer les 
efforts déployés à l’échelle mondiale pour améliorer la santé en comblant l’écart entre les 
déclarations internationales et les réalités locales. Il s’agit de la première fois que 
l’événement a lieu à l’extérieur de l’Europe, et l’Alliance se réjouit du fait que le 
gouvernement de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard en soit l’hôte, et que le ministère de la Santé et 
du Mieux-être de l’Î.-P.-É. en soit le commanditaire officiel.
