SOCIAL HEALTH & AGING

AN ONLINE WORKSHOP FOR HEALTHCARE & OTHER PROFESSIONALS

When: Mon November 4th to Sun December 1st, 2013 (4 weeks) ONLINE weekly at your discretion

Course Objectives:
* To become familiar with the social health components of older adults * To be able to screen for socially unhealthy older adults * To be able to use social health assessment tools * To understand ways of intervention for achieving better social health for older adults in Canada

Week one: Social Health - Definitions and Theory Definitions of Social Health in late life The social components of older adults' social health: social engagement, support networks, social exclusion The health components of older adults' social health: Quality of life and well-being, Physical and mental health

Week two: Assessment - How to screen and assess socially unhealthy older adults Screening those at risk Assessment Specific tools

Week three: Intervention
What can be done to help and by whom
Evidenced-based knowledge on interventions in social health

Week four: Socially healthy aging in Canada Supportive environment Social health for older Canadians

Instructor: Tal Spalter, PhD
Dr. Tal Spalter is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Institute for Life Course and Aging, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Tal works with Professor Lynn McDonald, Director of the Institute, on a knowledge mobilization project that is examining how evidence-based social pocket tools, disseminated by the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE), are being used by various stakeholders (e.g., older adults, caregivers, clinicians). Her specialties are: Aging & Gerontology Studies; Social Capital and Social Networks; Life Course Transitions; Inter-generational and Family Relationships; Quality of Life; Knowledge Translation/Exchange; and Changes in functioning in late life.
