Most Alberta youth in Grades 6 to 9 have never tried smoking cigarettes.
However, for those youth who have tried smoking, the average age of
their first experience was just under 12 years. Twice as many girls are
current smokers compared to boys. Furthermore, cigarette use in this age
group is greater in Alberta's rural regions than in Edmonton or Calgary,
and increases the further north the youth live.
These are some of the findings of the first Alberta-wide study of
adolescent tobacco use [Alberta Youth Tobacco Survey (AYTS)].
