Millennium Development Goal (MDG) number 5 calls for a reduction in maternal mortality and universal access to reproductive health. One central component of both of these goals is access to contraceptives, which empowers men and women to make their own reproductive choices. Contraceptive use reduces maternal mortality by helping women to delay, space, and limit pregnancies, reducing the health risks of frequent and numerous pregnancies and of complications from unsafe abortions due to unintended pregnancies. In the past year alone, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT has provided support to family planning programs in 53 countries.
