Application has been made to the Canadian Institute for Health Research for a 8
month project entitled
Income, Health and Disease in Canada: Current State of Knowledge, Information
Gaps, and
Areas of Needed Inquiry. The funding decision will be made in early January,
2002 at which time the
project would begin. The project is a joint initative of the York University,
University of Saskatchewan, and
Genuine Progress Index, Atlantic.

The objectives of the project are to:
1. Conduct an environmental scan of the current state of substantive research
and theoretical activity related to how
income and its distribution affects Canadians' health status.
2. Compare and contrast the current state of research activity on income and
its distribution with that seen in the
United Kingdom and Finland.
3. Create a network of interested parties from the population and public health,
 social development, and social policy
sectors to evaluate the relative importance of the identified gaps in research
activity and knowledge on how income and its
distribution affects population health.
4. Identify the extent to which this substantive activity in Canada and
elsewhere has been translated into policy and program
development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions designed to
influence the health of Canadians.
5. Identify potential areas of research into the how income and its distribution
affects Canadians' health and potential areas
of policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation.

The researcher (per annum salary of $31,840 + 25% benefits) would be
responsible for carrying out -- under general direction
of the three principal investigators -- the collection, analysis, and reporting
of information related to the project's objectives. He/she
would also work closely with researchers in Saskatoon/Regina and Halifax.

The candidate would be expected to have education at the graduate level or
equivalent and be familiar with the literature on
social determinants of health, with specific emphasis on income and income
distribution and health. Demonstrated ability to critically analyze
research findings is essential.

qualiafications in a fuller job description If you are interested in
