Faculty Position Openings

The Department of Community Health Sciences of the University of Calgary
invites applications for two full-time faculty positions at the rank of
Assistant Professor, commencing September 1, 2002 (negotiable) in the
broad area of Health & Society. We seek a productive research scholar
with interest in any of: social and economic determinants of health, the
political economy of health, illness and health care, social inequality
and health, the application of social research methods to health
phenomena, health services and health systems research, gender and
health, aboriginal health, cultural dimensions of health, health care,
and illness, or any other subject broadly in the area of 'Health &
Society'. The successful candidates will be appointed in the Department
of Community Health Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine. Candidates must
have a PhD in an appropriate social science or health sciences
discipline, and will be expected to develop a strong interdisciplinary
research programme in the broad area of health and society, successfully
compete for external research funding, and disseminate the results of
this program in peer-reviewed publications. Candidates must also
demonstrate an ability to teach in an interdisciplinary Bachelor's
program and provide undergraduate and graduate research supervision. An
interest in pedagogical issues and experience with innovative teaching
methods would be an asset.

The successful candidates will fulfill his or her undergraduate teaching
duties within the Health & Society Major of a new interdisciplinary
Bachelor of Health Sciences program under development in the Faculty of
Medicine. The program is founded on the principle that the perspectives
of the social sciences are a crucial component of a complete
understanding of contemporary health problems facing Canadian society.
Graduate teaching duties will be fulfilled in the Department of
Community Health Sciences, which offers MSc and PhD degrees, as well as
a Community Medicine Residency Program.

Review of applications will begin June 1, 2002, but the positions will
remain open until filled.

given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.  The
