New ConEd Course on Peer Support at George Brown College
begins September 15
"Working with Self Help and Peer Support Initiatives"
This course introduces professionals from diverse disciplines to working with self-help and peer support initiatives. Through readings, guest speakers, group work and presentations, students develop an integrated sensitivity to the critical issues and skills of working as a professional with community-based helping initiatives.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the unique characteristics of self-help approaches
2. Differentiate between self-help and peer support, whether member- or professionally-led
3. Assess the impact of professional role on the dynamics of the group
4. Explain the effects which various professional actions and relationships have on the group
5. Select interventions in group development or process in an appropriate manner
The course runs for 12 weeks during the fall/05 and again (new class) in winter/06.
