I would be interested in what is available in this area - and in the
related field of health care needs/perceptions (individual and system)
from other cultural traditions (along the lines of The Spirit Catches
You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman). I am beginning to move forward
on research around health care service/perceptions of health/health and
social needs in other cultures, primarily as they move to Canada as
immigrants or refugees, and how our health care system is able (or not)
to understand and respond, and most especially in rural or small urban
(under 200,000) centres.

Subject: cross culture - sense of control
Hello Click4Hp-ers
I have a question that's purely out of curiosity.
We all know the studies where we've seen health status varies according
to
income/social status and the "locus of control".
It occurs to me that different cultures might place different value on
the
locus of control and the need to have it in one's life. For example,
many
eastern religions place a focus on maintaining a detachment from daily
events, asserting that there doesn't have to be a direct relationship
between what happens in this world and what happens in their inner
selves.
(I'm probably not explaining this right).
So, I'm wondering - does anyone know of any studies associating
income/locus
of control with health status in other non-Western cultures/societies?
Does
the relationship hold in different cultural contexts?
Thanks, in advance!
Roxanne Felix
