WHY AM I STILL HUNGRY?

We know that social and economic environments have a huge influence on maternal and child health, but how much do we understand about the roots of child poverty in Ontario - and what can be done? Join us for this pre-conference session to build our understanding of the programs and strategies that reduce poverty and improve health equity.

KEYNOTES

OUR DREAMS MATTER TOO: FIRST NATIONS CHILDREN SEARCHING FOR EQUALITY

Cindy Blackstock, PhD, Executive Director, First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada; Associate Professor, University of Alberta

For decades, First Nations children and families have received less benefit from education, child welfare, and health services than all other Canadians. First Nations and non-Aboriginal children are taking action creating the largest child lead reconciliation movement in Canada that puts culturally based equity at the center. It uplifts First Nations and non-Aboriginal kids alike and shows adults that change can really happen if you care enough and work hard enough. Be inspired and then take action.

NURTURING MATTERS

Judy Buchan, RN, BScN, Project Manager, Nurturing the Next Generation, Peel Public Health

Brenda Smith-Chant, PhD, Chair, Psychology Department, Trent University; Adjunct Professor, the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Institute, York University

Peel Public Health has made the health of its youngest citizens one of its greatest priorities. Nurturing the Next Generation is the name that has been given to this initiative, aiming to use evidence to inform programs with a focus on the preconception period to the end of the first year of life. The journey to partner with leading academics, our success in obtaining a research grant, the contribution to public health knowledge and the dissemination of study findings will be presented. Opportunities to actively participate in how 'Nurturing Matters' will be highlighted.

ALCOHOL USE AND PREGNANCY: WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

Vyta Senikas, MD, Associate Executive Vice-President and CPL Division Director, The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada has led the development of a consensus report on screening and recording alcohol use in women of childbearing age and pregnant women, and published a national consensus guideline on Alcohol Use and Pregnancy. Given the confusion surrounding thresholds of alcohol use in pregnancy and women of childbearing age, there was a need to reconcile the information and to provide clear direction to healthcare producers. This presentation will highlight definitions, consumption statistics, screening and counselling tools as well as recommendations from the Alcohol Use and Pregnancy guideline.
